Blue is a color of complexity. The hue has different meanings and associations depending on the shade and has many global interpretations from drunkenness to the Germans to spiritual protection for the Greeks. Despite the many meanings, blue remains the favorite color to many and is always present in music.

Blue is the color of the sky and water. Based on these natural associations, blue represents serenity, tranquility, stability, cleanliness, trustworthiness, and the heavens. Much like the ocean, darker shades of blue represent intensity, almost as if the color becomes too overwhelming and swallows you. For many Americans, blue is often associated with sadness and depression as the phrase “feeling blue” became popular. This is most likely due to the blues music genre originated by Black Americans to express their sorrows during times of discrimination and abuse.
